Cheapest Places to Fly from Halifax (YHZ): Where the Deals Are
If you live in Halifax, you already know the feeling: you open a booking site, type “YHZ”, and the fares make you close the tab. The good news is that Halifax Stanfield is busier and better connected than ever, and some routes have far more competition than others. More airlines on a route usually means more seats on sale, more fare sales, and better odds of a deal.
This guide walks through the destinations from Halifax that tend to offer the best value, why, and how to actually find the low fares. We don’t quote prices here, because airfares change by the hour. Instead, we show you where the competition is so you know where to look, and then you can check current prices for your own dates.

How we picked these destinations
Airfare isn’t random. Fares tend to be lowest where several airlines fight for the same passengers, and where at least one low-cost carrier is in the mix. So instead of guessing, we started from the airport’s own published non-stop schedule for the 2026–27 season and looked for three things:
- Number of airlines flying the route non-stop. Two or more is good; four is excellent.
- A low-cost carrier such as Flair or Porter on the route, which tends to pull fares down for everyone.
- Year-round versus seasonal service. Year-round routes give you more dates to play with, so you can hunt for the cheapest day.
All schedule details below come from Halifax Stanfield’s non-stop flight listings as of October 2026. Airlines change schedules often, so always confirm with the airline before you plan around a route.
Canada: the everyday deals
1. Toronto (YYZ): the most competitive route out of Halifax
If you only remember one thing from this guide, make it this: Halifax–Toronto is the busiest, most competitive route at YHZ. Air Canada, Porter, WestJet and Flair all fly it non-stop, year-round, with many departures a day. That much competition makes Toronto the most reliable place to find a low fare, and it also makes Toronto a smart connecting point for trips further afield.
Toronto isn’t your only option in southern Ontario. Porter flies non-stop to Hamilton and to London, Ontario, and Flair flies to Kitchener-Waterloo. If your final stop is Niagara, Hamilton or anywhere west of the city, one of these smaller airports can be cheaper and easier than Pearson. Compare all of them before you book.
2. Montréal: two airports, two airlines
Air Canada and Porter both fly Halifax to Montréal-Trudeau (YUL) year-round, and Porter also serves Montréal Saint-Hubert (YHU) on the South Shore. Montréal is a great weekend escape: walkable neighbourhoods, festivals in summer, and a European feel without a passport. If you’re flexible, check both airports.
3. Ottawa: a quiet bargain
Ottawa gets less attention, but Air Canada and Porter both fly it year-round with several flights a day. That makes it a solid value city break, especially for families visiting the museums or Parliament Hill. Winterlude in February is a classic.
4. Calgary and Edmonton: your gateway to the Rockies
WestJet flies Halifax to Calgary and Edmonton non-stop year-round, with seasonal service to Vancouver (Air Canada and WestJet) and Winnipeg (WestJet) in the warmer months. Calgary is the classic jumping-off point for Banff, Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway, so if mountains are on your bucket list, start your fare hunt here.
5. Newfoundland: St. John’s and Deer Lake
Both St. John’s and Deer Lake have non-stop flights from Halifax on Air Canada and Porter, year-round. Two airlines on a short route is a good recipe for sales. St. John’s gives you colourful Jellybean Row, puffins and icebergs in season. Deer Lake is the closest airport to Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most spectacular landscapes in Atlantic Canada.

The U.S.: short hops to big cities
Halifax has a surprising number of non-stop U.S. flights, though many are summer-only.
- Boston: Air Canada flies daily, year-round. American and Delta add summer service.
- New York: Air Canada and United fly to Newark (EWR) year-round. American and Delta fly to LaGuardia (LGA) in summer.
- Summer extras: Chicago (United and American), Philadelphia and Washington DCA (American), Washington Dulles (United), and Detroit (WestJet).
Boston and New York are the best bets for value because they have year-round service and more than one airline. Remember that Canadians need a valid passport to fly to the U.S., and it’s worth checking the latest U.S. entry rules before you go.
Winter sun from Halifax
When the snowbanks pile up, Halifax becomes a launch pad for the Caribbean, Mexico and Florida. The 2026–27 winter schedule is one of the strongest yet:
| Destination | Airlines (non-stop from YHZ) | Season |
|---|---|---|
| Cancún, Mexico | Air Canada, Air Transat, Porter, WestJet | Late Oct to spring |
| Punta Cana, Dominican Republic | Air Canada, Air Transat, WestJet | Late Oct to spring |
| Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic | Air Transat, WestJet | Winter to spring |
| Montego Bay, Jamaica | Air Canada, Air Transat, WestJet | Winter to spring |
| Orlando, Florida | Air Canada, Porter | Late Oct to spring |
| Fort Lauderdale, Florida | Porter | Winter to spring |
| Tampa, Florida | Air Canada | Winter |
| Nassau, Bahamas | Air Canada | Winter |
| Bridgetown, Barbados | Air Canada | Winter |
| Bermuda | BermudAir | Year-round |
Cancún is the standout. With four airlines flying it non-stop this winter, it’s the sun route with the most competition from Halifax. Punta Cana, with three airlines, is a close second. For these destinations, compare flight-only fares against all-inclusive packages, because packages can sometimes beat booking flights and hotels separately.

Europe from Halifax
Halifax is closer to Europe than any other major Canadian city, which means shorter flights and, often, good-value fares. This is where Atlantic Canadians have a real advantage.
- London: Air Canada flies to Heathrow daily, year-round. WestJet adds Gatwick in summer.
- Summer non-stops on WestJet: Dublin, Edinburgh, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Lisbon.
- Air Canada summer service to Brussels.
- Discover Airlines to Frankfurt, from late March to November.
- Edelweiss to Zurich in summer.
- Air Saint-Pierre to Saint-Pierre, the French islands just off Newfoundland, year-round. It’s the closest you can get to France without crossing the ocean.
London is the best place to start because it has year-round service on two airlines, and it connects to cheap flights across Europe. In summer, Dublin and Edinburgh are worth checking too: shorter flights, and two of the friendliest cities you’ll ever visit.

How to find the cheapest fares from YHZ
Knowing where the competition is gets you halfway there. Here’s how to close the deal:
- Be flexible by a few days. Midweek departures are often cheaper than Fridays and Sundays. Use a flexible-date or calendar view to see a whole month at once.
- Search the route, not just the airline. A flight search engine like Aviasales compares many airlines and booking sites in one go, so you can see who’s cheapest on your dates.
- Check the “nearby airports” trick. In Ontario, compare Toronto Pearson with Hamilton, London and Kitchener-Waterloo. In Montréal, compare YUL and Saint-Hubert.
- Travel in shoulder season. May–June and September–October usually mean lower fares to Europe than July and August, and the weather is still great.
- Count the extras. Low-cost carriers often charge for checked bags, seat selection and even larger carry-ons. A cheap base fare can end up costing more than a full-service ticket, so compare the total.
- Set price alerts for the routes you care about, then book when the price drops.
- Consider a Toronto connection. For destinations Halifax doesn’t serve non-stop, a cheap YHZ–YYZ fare plus a separate onward ticket can sometimes win. Leave plenty of time between flights, because separate tickets aren’t protected if you miss a connection.

FAQ: cheap flights from Halifax
What is the cheapest place to fly from Halifax?
There’s no single answer, because fares change constantly. But routes with the most competition tend to have the lowest fares. From Halifax that’s Toronto, with four airlines flying it non-stop year-round. In winter, Cancún has four airlines too. Check current prices for your dates to see what’s cheapest right now.
Which low-cost airlines fly from Halifax?
According to Halifax Stanfield’s schedule, Flair flies to Toronto and Kitchener-Waterloo, and Porter flies to several Canadian cities plus winter sun routes to Florida and Cancún. Remember to compare the total price including bags and seats.
When is the cheapest time to fly from Halifax to Europe?
Shoulder seasons, roughly May to June and September to October, usually offer better value than peak summer. Many non-stop European routes from Halifax are seasonal, so London Heathrow, served year-round by Air Canada, is the main option in winter.
Does Halifax have direct flights to Europe?
Yes. Air Canada flies to London Heathrow year-round. In summer there are non-stop flights to cities such as Dublin, Edinburgh, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Lisbon, Brussels, Frankfurt and Zurich. Check with the airline for current dates.
Is it cheaper to fly out of Moncton or Halifax?
It depends on the route and date. Halifax has many more non-stop routes and airlines, which often helps on price, but it can be worth comparing nearby airports if you live closer to them. A flight search engine lets you check several airports at once.
Schedule information comes from Halifax Stanfield International Airport’s published non-stop flight listings, checked in October 2026. Schedules are subject to change; verify with the airline before booking.
