Cheap Flights from Halifax to Europe: When to Book and How to Save
Halifax sits closer to Europe than almost any other big Canadian airport, and in summer that shows: you can fly non-stop from YHZ to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, Lisbon and more, often overnight, landing in time for breakfast. The tricky part is the price, and the timing. Most of these routes are seasonal, schedules shift from year to year, and fares can jump if you wait too long.
This guide covers which European cities you can actually reach non-stop from Halifax Stanfield, when each route flies, how far ahead to book, and the practical ways to pay less. We also cover the entry rules Canadians need to know for Europe and the U.K. right now. We don’t quote fares, because they change by the hour, but we do link every schedule and rule to its official source so you can check the latest before you book.

Non-stop flights from Halifax to Europe
Here’s every European non-stop route listed on Halifax Stanfield’s non-stop flights page when we checked in October 2026. The dates are for the 2026 season; the airport notes that schedules are subject to change, so always verify with the airline.
| Destination | Airline | 2026 season (per Halifax Stanfield) |
|---|---|---|
| London Heathrow (LHR) | Air Canada | Year-round, daily |
| London Gatwick (LGW) | WestJet | April 27 – October 7 |
| Dublin | WestJet | April 26 – October 11 |
| Edinburgh | WestJet | April 27 – October 3 |
| Paris | WestJet | April 26 – October 23 |
| Amsterdam | WestJet | April 30 – October 9 |
| Lisbon | WestJet | May 1 – October 23 |
| Barcelona | WestJet | May 17 – October 15 |
| Frankfurt | Discover Airlines | March 29 – November 19 |
| Zurich | Edelweiss | June 4 – October 18 |
| Brussels | Air Canada | June 18 – September 5 |
A few things jump out:
- London Heathrow is the only year-round non-stop to Europe. If you’re travelling between November and March, it’s your one direct option, and a natural connecting point onward.
- WestJet is the big summer player, flying seven of the routes above in 2026. WestJet notes that its Dublin flight is as short as about 5.5 hours, and all of its Halifax–Europe flights are under eight hours (WestJet summer 2026 release via Halifax Stanfield).
- Frankfurt has the longest season of the seasonal routes, running from late March into November in 2026, which makes it handy for shoulder-season trips into Germany and central Europe.
- London has two airlines on two airports in summer. Comparing Heathrow (Air Canada) with Gatwick (WestJet) is one of the easiest ways to find a better fare to the U.K.
Bonus curiosity: Air Saint-Pierre flies year-round from Halifax to Saint-Pierre, the French islands off Newfoundland. It’s not Europe, but it’s as close to France as you’ll get without crossing the ocean.
What is changing for summer 2027
Routes come and go, so check before you plan around one. In 2026 WestJet also flew Halifax to Copenhagen and Madrid, but both have been removed from its summer 2027 schedule, according to PAX News and SaltWire. The same reports say Icelandair is ending its seasonal Halifax service after its final flight on October 18, 2026.
The airport authority told SaltWire that Halifax remains connected to Spain via WestJet’s Barcelona flight, and that Air Canada’s Heathrow service continues year-round. Summer 2027 schedules for the other routes weren’t all published when we checked, so treat the 2026 dates above as a guide, not a promise.

The best time to fly to Europe from Halifax
From Halifax, “when to go” is partly decided for you by the schedule:
- Peak summer (July–August): every seasonal route is flying, so you have the most choice, but this is also when demand is highest.
- Shoulder season (late April–June and September–October): most WestJet routes are already or still operating, and you avoid the peak-summer crush. It’s the sweet spot for non-stop choice without peak demand. Watch the end dates, though: several routes stop in early October.
- Winter (November–March): only Heathrow is non-stop. Everywhere else means a connection, either through London or via Toronto or Montréal. Winter can still be good value, especially for city breaks.
If your dates are flexible, a flexible-date or month view in a flight search shows you which weeks are cheapest at a glance.
When to book flights from Halifax to Europe
There’s no magic day, but there is good data. Google analysed five years of Google Flights fares for its 2026 booking-trends report. Its figures are for U.S. departures, so treat them as a guide rather than a Halifax rule, but the patterns are useful:
- Trips to Europe were cheapest about 90 days before departure, and the low-price range ran from 49 days or more out. Google’s advice: waiting rarely pays off, so book as soon as you can.
- The day you book barely matters. The cheapest booking day saved only about 1.4% compared with the most expensive day.
- The days you fly do matter. Departing on a Monday and returning on a Tuesday or Wednesday saved about 14% compared with weekend flights.
- Non-stops cost more. Non-stop tickets were about 20% more expensive on average than connecting itineraries.
For Halifax, that adds up to a simple plan: start watching fares at least three to four months before a summer trip, set a price alert, and book once the fare looks good rather than holding out for a last-minute drop. Seasonal routes have limited seats, and the cheapest ones go first.
8 ways to find cheap flights from Halifax to Europe
- Search the whole region, not one city. If you just want “Europe in June”, compare all the non-stop cities above. A search engine such as Aviasales compares many airlines and booking sites at once.
- Compare the two London airports. In summer, check Heathrow and Gatwick side by side.
- Fly into one city and out of another. An “open-jaw” ticket, for example into Dublin and home from Paris, can save you backtracking, and both legs are covered by Halifax non-stops in summer.
- Weigh non-stop against one stop. Given Google’s finding that non-stops average about 20% more, a connection through Toronto, Montréal or a European hub is worth pricing, especially in winter.
- Use a gateway, then go cheap within Europe. Land in a hub such as London, Amsterdam or Frankfurt and continue by train or short-haul flight. Compare the total, and leave generous time between separate tickets, because a missed connection on separate bookings usually isn’t protected.
- Count the extras. Bags, seat selection and change fees vary by airline and fare type. Compare the total trip price, not just the headline fare.
- Fly midweek. Monday-out, midweek-back trips were cheaper in Google’s data.
- Set alerts on two or three routes and book when one hits your budget.

Travel essentials for Canadians going to Europe
Passport validity
- Schengen countries (France, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark and more): the Government of Canada says your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the date you expect to leave the Schengen area (travel.gc.ca, France). Canadians don’t need a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across all Schengen countries.
- United Kingdom: your passport must be valid for at least the expected duration of your stay (travel.gc.ca, U.K.).
- Ireland: valid for the expected duration of your stay (travel.gc.ca, Ireland).
Airlines can have stricter rules, so check with yours too.
EU Entry/Exit System (EES): in force now
The EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since April 10, 2026, replacing passport stamps at Schengen external borders. On your first entry, border officers record your passport details, a facial image and fingerprints. Cyprus and Ireland don’t use the EES. Travel.gc.ca notes that you don’t need to do anything before you travel, but allow a little extra time at the border on your first trip.
ETIAS: not yet in operation
You may have heard that Canadians will need an ETIAS travel authorisation for Europe. As of October 2026, the official ETIAS website says ETIAS is not in operation and no applications are being collected. The EU says it will announce the start date several months before launch. Ignore any website offering to sell you one now; when it launches, apply only through the official EU site.
U.K. ETA: required now
Canadians do need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to visit the U.K. The U.K. government began enforcing it on February 25, 2026, and airlines can refuse boarding without one. According to GOV.UK, it costs £20 through the official website or UK ETA app, usually comes back within a day (allow up to 3 working days), and lasts 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Everyone needs their own, including children. Avoid copycat sites that charge more.
Health insurance
Your provincial plan won’t go far in Europe. For Nova Scotians, the province says MSI coverage outside Canada is limited to inpatient emergencies, doesn’t cover outpatient care, tests or ambulances, and recommends medical travel insurance. Compare travel insurance plans before you go, and check what your credit card or workplace plan already covers.
Staying connected
Roaming on a Canadian plan can get expensive over a week or two. A travel eSIM like Airalo gives you local data from the moment you land. Our guide to the best eSIM for Canadians explains how to choose and set one up.
