All-Inclusive Vacations from Halifax: The Atlantic Canadian’s Guide to Winter Sun
Where to go all-inclusive from Halifax this winter: every non-stop sun flight from YHZ for 2026–27, destinations compared, packages vs DIY, Cuba’s insurance rule and entry requirements.
When the snow piles up in Halifax, an all-inclusive week in the sun starts to look like a very good idea. The good news: this winter you can fly non-stop from Halifax Stanfield to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, the Bahamas and, new this season, Barbados. The less good news: routes, airlines and entry rules all change from year to year, and one long-time favourite, Cuba, is currently under a Government of Canada advisory.
This is the Atlantic Canadian’s guide to winter sun: where you can fly direct from YHZ for winter 2026–27, how the main all-inclusive destinations compare, whether a package or a do-it-yourself booking makes more sense, and the insurance and entry rules to sort out before you go. We don’t quote package prices, because they change daily, but every schedule and rule below links to its official source.

Quick picks: where to go all-inclusive from Halifax
- Most flight choice: Cancún, Mexico. Four airlines fly Halifax–Cancún non-stop this winter, which means more dates to choose from and more competition on price.
- Big beach resorts: Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Three airlines fly direct, with the first flights in late October.
- Quieter north coast: Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Two airlines fly direct from January and February.
- New this winter: Barbados. Air Canada adds a weekly non-stop from December, the first direct service connecting Barbados with Atlantic Canada, according to PAX News.
- Short hop with island hopping: Nassau, Bahamas. One weekly Air Canada flight in winter.
- Jamaica, with a caveat. Montego Bay has weekly non-stops, but several big resorts near the airport are still closed after Hurricane Melissa. Check the resort is open before you book.
- On hold: Cuba. The Government of Canada currently advises against non-essential travel to Cuba, and Canadian airlines have suspended service. More on that [below](#cuba-what-you-need-to-know-right-now).

Direct winter flights from Halifax 2026-27
These are the sun routes listed on Halifax Stanfield’s non-stop flights page when we checked on October 19, 2026. Dates are for the 2026–27 winter season and the airport notes that schedules are subject to change, so confirm with the airline before you book.

| Bridgetown, Barbados (BGI) | Air Canada | Thu | Dec 17, 2026 – Apr 1, 2027 |
What the table tells you:
- Before mid-December, your direct options are Air Canada and WestJet to Cancún and Air Canada to Punta Cana. Air Transat and Porter join for the holidays.
- Jamaica, Nassau and Barbados are once a week per airline, so your trip length is set by the flight days. A Thursday-to-Thursday week is the natural fit for Barbados.
- Not on the list: Cuba and Aruba. Porter’s new Aruba service is from Toronto and Ottawa, not Halifax (Porter announcement). Florida (Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa) and Bermuda also have non-stops if you want sun without a resort.
If no direct date works, a one-stop connection through Toronto or Montreal opens up many more resorts. For flight-deal tactics that go beyond the sun, see our guide to cheap flights from Halifax.

A note on what we left out: we don’t list flight times or “budget level” ratings because we couldn’t confirm them from official sources for every route. Check the duration in any flight search before you book.

Package or book flight and resort separately?
There are two ways to do an all-inclusive week from Halifax.
A vacation package bundles your flight, resort and usually the airport transfer. The airlines’ own vacation brands (Air Canada Vacations, WestJet Vacations and Transat) sell packages built around their Halifax departures. Packages make sense when:
- you want one booking and one company to call if something goes wrong;
- you’re happy with the airline’s flight days;
- you’re travelling over a peak week and want everything locked in at once.
Booking separately means buying the flight yourself and booking the resort direct or through a hotel site. It makes sense when:
- the resort you want isn’t offered in a package from Halifax;
- you want a different length of stay than the weekly flight allows;
- you’re using points for the flight, or you want to connect through another city.
The honest answer is to price both. Search the same dates as a package, then search flights from Halifax and compare the resort on Trip.com. Make sure you’re comparing like with like: packages often include transfers, and some resorts include them too (Sandals does), while others don’t (Hyatt Ziva Cancún, for example, says airport transfers are not included).
The cheapest time to go all-inclusive
There’s no single cheapest week, and we won’t pretend there is, but a few patterns hold:
- Book roughly one to two months ahead for flights. Google’s 2026 holiday travel analysis of U.S. departures found Mexico and Caribbean fares were lowest about 43 days before departure, with the low-price window between 24 and 69 days out (Google). It’s U.S. data, so treat it as a guide.
- Shift your days. The same Google analysis found leaving on a Monday and returning on a Tuesday or Wednesday saved about 14% on average. From Halifax, your choice of days depends on which airline flies when (see the table above).
- Non-stops cost more. Google found non-stop flights averaged about 20% more than connecting ones. For a short trip, the time saved is usually worth it.
- Watch the hurricane season. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 (NOAA). Most direct winter routes from Halifax start after it ends anyway.
- School holidays mean competition. If you’re tied to the holidays or March break, book early: you’re competing with every other family for the same seats.
Adults-only or family resort?
Many all-inclusive brands split cleanly between adults-only and all-ages resorts. In Punta Cana, for example, Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana welcomes all ages while the neighbouring Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana is for adults 18 and over, and Ziva guests aged 18+ can use the Zilara. The Sandals resorts we checked are adults-only and designed for couples, and Excellence Playa Mujeres near Cancún is adults-only (18+).
Thinking about the Dominican Republic? Our Halifax to Punta Cana all-inclusive guide compares Bávaro, Cap Cana and Uvero Alto and covers the e-Ticket.
Considering Jamaica? Our Halifax to Jamaica all-inclusive guide tracks which resorts are open after Hurricane Melissa and compares Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios.
Not sure when to book? Our guide to the cheapest time to go all-inclusive from Halifax covers booking windows, school breaks and hurricane season.
Travelling with kids? Our family all-inclusive guide compares kids’ clubs and water parks on Halifax non-stops and covers passports and consent letters for children.
Look for these when choosing a family resort: kids’ clubs and the ages they cover, teen clubs, water parks or splash pools, and connecting rooms or family suites. For couples: adults-only status (check the minimum age), à la carte dining that doesn’t need reservations, and quiet pools.
We compare specific adults-only and family resorts, all reachable on a direct winter flight from YHZ, in our best all-inclusive resorts from Halifax guide.

Travel insurance and entry rules
Health insurance: don’t rely on MSI
Your Nova Scotia health card won’t go far at a resort. The province says MSI coverage outside Canada only covers inpatient emergencies, reimbursed up to $525 CAD a day plus 50% of ancillary fees, and doesn’t cover outpatient care, tests or ambulances. It recommends buying travel health insurance. Compare travel insurance plans, and check that your plan covers your destination and any activities you’re planning. Prefer a Canadian insurer? Cuba: what you need to know right now
As of the Government of Canada’s Cuba travel advice (updated October 5, 2026):
- The advisory level is avoid non-essential travel, due to severe shortages of fuel, electricity, food, water and medicine that can also affect resorts.
- Canadian airlines have suspended service to Cuba until further notice.
- If you do travel, Cuba requires proof of medical insurance on arrival. Without it, you may have to buy Cuban insurance at the airport, which may offer limited coverage.
- Canadians need a tourist visa (generally included in packages) and can complete the online D’Viajeros customs form up to 72 hours before arrival.
We’ll update this page when the advisory changes. Until then, Mexico and the Dominican Republic are the closest equivalents for a classic beach all-inclusive from Halifax.
Entry rules at a glance
- Mexico: no visa for stays up to 180 days; air travellers complete the digital FMMD form on arrival (travel.gc.ca).
- Dominican Republic: passport valid at least six months after arrival; complete the free E-Ticket form before each trip (travel.gc.ca).
- Jamaica: passport valid for your stay; no visa for up to 90 days (travel.gc.ca).
- Bahamas: passport valid six months beyond your departure date (travel.gc.ca).
- Barbados: passport valid for your stay; no visa for up to 180 days (travel.gc.ca).
Rules change, so check the destination page on travel.gc.ca again a few days before you fly.

Staying connected and airport transfers
Resort Wi-Fi is fine for messages, but it rarely reaches the beach or the excursion bus. A travel eSIM such as Airalo gives you local data from the moment you land. Our guide to the best eSIM for Canadians explains how to choose one.
If your resort or package doesn’t include transfers, pre-booking a private ride saves haggling at arrivals after a long day. Check Kiwitaxi for your arrival airport and resort area, and compare the price with your resort’s own shuttle.
Leaving from Halifax Stanfield? Our guides to getting to and from Halifax airport and car rental at Halifax airport cover the Route 320 bus, taxis and parking-free options.

FAQ: all-inclusive vacations from Halifax
Where can I fly non-stop from Halifax for an all-inclusive this winter?
For winter 2026–27, Halifax Stanfield lists non-stops to Cancún, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, Montego Bay, Nassau and Bridgetown, Barbados, plus Florida and Bermuda. Cancún has the most choice, with Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat and Porter. Confirm dates with the airline.
Can I fly direct from Halifax to Cuba this winter?
Not at the moment. The Government of Canada says all Canadian airlines have suspended service to Cuba until further notice, and its advisory (updated October 5, 2026) is to avoid non-essential travel to Cuba.
Do I need travel insurance for an all-inclusive trip?
Cuba requires proof of medical insurance on arrival. Elsewhere it isn’t an entry requirement, but Nova Scotia MSI only covers inpatient emergencies outside Canada, up to $525 CAD a day, so the province recommends travel health insurance.
Is a package cheaper than booking flight and resort separately?
It depends on the dates and resort. Packages bundle flights, the resort and often transfers; booking separately gives you more choice of resort and trip length. Price both for the same dates and compare what’s included.
How far ahead should I book an all-inclusive from Halifax?
For flights, Google’s 2026 analysis of U.S. departures found Mexico and Caribbean fares were lowest about 43 days out, within a 24 to 69 day window. For school holidays and March break, book earlier, as direct seats from Halifax are limited.
Do Canadians need a passport for Mexico or the Dominican Republic?
Yes. Mexico requires a passport valid for your stay and a digital immigration form on arrival. The Dominican Republic requires a passport valid at least six months after arrival and an E-Ticket form before each trip.
