Nova Scotia road trip map: the route
Think of this route as a big loop: south-west along the coast, across to the Bay of Fundy, then north-east to Cape Breton Island and back to Halifax.
- Day 1: Halifax
- Day 2: Halifax → Peggy’s Cove → Mahone Bay → Lunenburg
- Day 3: South Shore beaches and Kejimkujik Seaside (base: Lunenburg)
- Day 4: Lunenburg → Annapolis Valley and Bay of Fundy (base: Wolfville)
- Day 5: Wolfville → Northumberland Shore → Cape Breton
- Day 6: Cabot Trail
- Day 7: Baddeck and back to Halifax
Tourism Nova Scotia says its similar Best of Nova Scotia 7-day road trip covers about 1,800 to 2,000 km, with typical drives of two to three hours a day and a busy pace. Plot the stops in Google Maps before you go to see live drive times and any construction.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Halifax
Pick up your car (or take it the next morning) and spend the day in the capital. Walk the roughly 4 km Halifax Waterfront boardwalk, climb to the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site for harbour views, and finish with seafood and live music downtown. Arriving late? Our Halifax airport to downtown guide compares the bus, taxis and shuttles, or you can pre-book a private transfer.
Day 2: Peggy’s Cove, Mahone Bay and Lunenburg
Tourism Nova Scotia puts Halifax to Lunenburg at about 1 hour 20 minutes on Highway 103, or longer on the scenic Lighthouse Route (Route 3). Detouring to Peggy’s Cove adds about half an hour of driving each way. Walk the granite at the lighthouse (stay off the black rocks), then follow the coast to Chester and Mahone Bay for the famous Three Churches view. In Lunenburg, an Old Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, take a walking tour, visit the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic or see the Bluenose II. Prefer not to drive this part? See our Peggy’s Cove tours from Halifax.

Day 3: South Shore beaches and Kejimkujik Seaside
Stay a second night in Lunenburg and explore the South Shore. Tourism Nova Scotia’s day trips from Lunenburg put Rissers Beach Provincial Park and Crescent Beach about 25 minutes away, and Kejimkujik National Park Seaside near Port Joli about 1 hour 15 minutes away. The Harbour Rocks trail at Keji Seaside leads to a granite coast where you can often see seals. Kids will like the beach day; check Parks Canada fees before you go.

Day 4: Annapolis Valley and the Bay of Fundy
Cut inland to the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia’s wine and orchard country. Taste Tidal Bay, the province’s appellation wine, on the Good Cheer Trail; watch boats rise and fall with the Fundy tide at Hall’s Harbour; and visit Grand-Pré National Historic Site, the gateway to the Landscape of Grand-Pré UNESCO site and a monument to Acadian history (open May 15 to October 12 in 2026). Spend the night in Wolfville.

Day 5: Northumberland Shore to Cape Breton
Tourism Nova Scotia says Wolfville to Pictou takes just under two and a half hours via Highways 101, 102 and 104. On the way you can walk the ocean floor at low tide at Burntcoat Head Park or go tidal bore rafting on the Shubenacadie River (both add hours, so pick one). Swim at a warm-water Northumberland Shore beach such as Melmerby Beach, then cross the Canso Causeway onto Cape Breton Island and sleep near the start of the Cabot Trail, in Baddeck or Chéticamp.

Day 6: The Cabot Trail
This is the highlight. Tourism Nova Scotia allows 3 to 6 hours of driving for the 298-km loop without stops, and about 2 hours between Chéticamp and Ingonish through Cape Breton Highlands National Park. One day is the minimum; for lookoffs, the Skyline Trail, whale watching and the best direction to drive, use our full Cabot Trail road trip itinerary.

Day 7: Baddeck and the drive back to Halifax
Tourism Nova Scotia puts Ingonish to Baddeck at about an hour and a half. Visit the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site or take a cruise on the Bras d’Or Lake, then make the long drive back to Halifax. It’s the biggest driving day of the trip, so leave early, or fly home from Sydney if your airline offers it.

10-day Nova Scotia road trip extension
With 10 days, slow down and add some of these, all from Tourism Nova Scotia’s 7-day route:
- Yarmouth and the Acadian Shores: about two and a half hours from Lunenburg. Stops include Barrington (the Lobster Capital of Canada), the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre and the 77 steps up Cape Forchu Lighthouse. From Yarmouth, it’s about two and a half hours through the Valley to Wolfville.
- Digby and Brier Island: scallops in Digby and whale-watching tours from Westport.
- Fortress of Louisbourg: about two and a half hours from Ingonish, a full day of living history.
- Eastern Shore: end at Guysborough (about 3 hours 15 minutes from Ingonish) and come back along the coast.
- Prince Edward Island: add a few days on the Island with our PEI road trip itinerary.
How many days do you need in Nova Scotia?
Only have a couple of days? Our Halifax weekend getaways guide picks the best short trips, from Lunenburg and Wolfville to a PEI long weekend.
- 3 to 4 days: Halifax, Peggy’s Cove, Lunenburg and the South Shore, or Halifax plus the Cabot Trail.
- 7 days: the loop above. It works, but expect two to three hours of driving most days.
- 10 days or more: the full loop plus Yarmouth, Louisbourg or PEI at a relaxed pace.
Road trip with kids? Tourism Nova Scotia suggests focusing on one region for a slower trip, such as Halifax to Yarmouth through the Valley, or Halifax to Cape Breton and back.
Car rental and driving tips
You really need a car: Tourism Nova Scotia says this trip is difficult without one. Most visitors pick up at Halifax Stanfield (YHZ). - Book early for July to September, when cars sell out.
- Highways 101, 102, 103 and 104 are the fast links; numbered scenic routes such as the Lighthouse Route are slower but prettier.
- Fill up before the Cabot Trail highlands, where services are spread out.
- Watch for deer and moose, especially at dawn and dusk.
- Check one-way fees if you plan to drop the car in Sydney. Compare one-way options.
Costs, age rules and insurance are covered in our Nova Scotia car rental guide.
Where to stay
- Halifax: downtown near the waterfront, so you can walk in the evening. See Halifax hotels on Trip.com.
- Lunenburg (2 nights): Tourism Nova Scotia suggests historic inns, B&Bs and chalets.
- Wolfville: a walkable base for the wineries.
- Cape Breton: Baddeck or Chéticamp before the Cabot Trail; Ingonish after it, where there are hotels and campgrounds.
Book summer and the fall-colour season early, especially in Cape Breton during the Celtic Colours festival in October.
Best time for a Nova Scotia road trip
Tourism Nova Scotia says its 7-day route is best in summer or early fall. July and August bring the warmest beach weather and full schedules. Late September to mid-October is fall-colour season on the Cabot Trail, though the timing varies each year. Outside the main season, many seasonal sites have shorter hours (Grand-Pré, for example, closes for the season on October 12 in 2026), so check before you build your days around one.

FAQ
How many days do you need in Nova Scotia?
Seven days is enough for the highlights (Halifax, Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg, the Annapolis Valley and Cape Breton) at a brisk pace. Tourism Nova Scotia's own 7-day route covers roughly 1,800 to 2,000 km. With 10 days you can add Yarmouth, Louisbourg or PEI and drive less each day.
Can you do a Nova Scotia road trip without a car?
Not easily. Tourism Nova Scotia says the trip is difficult without a car because Peggy's Cove, the Cabot Trail and Cape Breton Highlands National Park are best explored independently. Guided coach tours are the main alternative.
What is the best time for a Nova Scotia road trip?
Tourism Nova Scotia recommends summer or early fall for its 7-day route. Many seasonal attractions keep shorter hours outside summer; for example, Grand-Pré National Historic Site is open May 15 to October 12 in 2026.
Is a Nova Scotia road trip good with kids?
Yes, if you keep driving days short. Beaches on the South Shore and Northumberland Shore, Peggy's Cove's viewing deck, the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic and Parks Canada sites (free admission for youth) work well for families. Consider dropping Cape Breton for a slower loop.
Do I need a park pass on this route?
Parks Canada charges daily fees at places like Kejimkujik, Cape Breton Highlands National Park and Grand-Pré. If you stop at several, compare the daily fees with a Parks Canada Discovery Pass on the Parks Canada website.
Ready to go? Lock in your flight and car first, then the Lunenburg and Cape Breton nights, which fill up fastest in summer.
