Rent a Car Without a Credit Card in Canada (2026)
No credit card? You can still rent a car, but in Canada it takes more planning than most people expect. Many rental desks use a credit card in the driver’s name to hold a security deposit. Some accept debit, but usually with extra conditions, and some don’t accept it at all for pick-up. This guide explains what the big companies actually say, how deposits and holds work, how to find debit-friendly and deposit-free offers on Discover Cars, and what changes when you rent abroad.
Company policies come from Enterprise Canada and Avis Canada, and booking and coverage terms from Discover Cars’ help centre and terms and conditions, all checked October 21, 2026. Policies vary by location and supplier, so always read the rental conditions for your exact offer. We don’t quote deposit amounts; they change by car class and supplier.

Can you rent a car without a credit card in Canada?
Sometimes, yes. It depends entirely on the company, the location and the car class, not on a national rule.
- Some companies accept debit, with conditions. Enterprise Canada says it accepts major debit cards (not Maestro, Electron, Solo or prepaid cards), but 4x4s and premium vehicles need a credit card.
- Some don’t accept debit at pick-up. Avis Canada says Canadian and U.S. debit (Interac) cards aren’t accepted as credit identification when you pick up a car at Canadian locations. You can use debit to pay at the end of the rental.
- Prepaid cards rarely work. Both Enterprise and Avis exclude prepaid cards for pick-up.
- The card must be in the main driver’s name. Discover Cars says a card belonging to a relative, friend or other passenger usually can’t be used instead.
General guidance: if you have a debit card only, read the location’s policy before you book, not at the counter.
Which rental car companies don’t require a credit card?
Here’s what two of the biggest brands in Canada say on their own sites:
| Company (Canada) | Debit at pick-up? | Main conditions (official) |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise | Yes, at many locations | Major debit cards only, no prepaid; credit card needed for 4x4s and premium cars. Branch rules apply (see below). |
| Avis | No | Debit (Interac) not accepted as credit identification at pick-up in Canada; debit OK to pay at return. |
Enterprise branch rules are stricter than the headline. On its Toronto Union Station branch page, for example, debit renters need a licence address that matches their current home address, must live within 50 km of the branch or hold a licence from the same province, and must bring two proofs of address (such as a recent utility bill or pay stub). Debit renters are limited to certain car classes, and only a spouse or domestic partner can be an additional driver. At some airport branches, such as Grande Prairie, the page says Canadian debit cards aren’t accepted at all. Check your own branch’s page.
We haven’t verified other brands (Hertz, Budget, National, Alamo and local firms) yet, so check their Canadian terms directly. For a Halifax rental, our car rental at Halifax airport guide lists the desks at Halifax Stanfield.
Renting with a debit card in Canada: how to do it
- Search with filters, not hope. On Discover Cars, search rental cars and use the debit-card filter. Discover Cars’ help centre says some suppliers accept debit, depending on the specific offer.
- Open the rental conditions. Discover Cars says each supplier’s payment requirements are in the offer’s rental conditions before you book, under the payment or deposit section.
- Expect conditions. Discover Cars notes that suppliers accepting debit for the deposit usually ask you to buy their own extra insurance at the counter.
- Bring proof. Some branches want proof of address or a return travel itinerary (as Enterprise’s pages show).
- Bring a physical card. Discover Cars says digital wallets, virtual cards, prepaid and top-up cards generally aren’t accepted for the deposit.
Deposits and holds: what actually happens
A security deposit is usually a temporary hold on your card, not a charge. Discover Cars says the funds stay in your account but are unavailable until the hold is released. Its terms say the deposit covers things like the insurance excess, traffic fines, tolls and refuelling.
- The amount varies. Discover Cars says it depends on the car category and supplier, and shows the estimate in the rental conditions.
- It’s not Discover Cars’ money. Its terms say the deposit is held by the rental company, not by Discover Cars, and you can’t use Discover Cars to pay it.
- Release takes time. Discover Cars says a hold typically releases within 21 business days (about 30 calendar days) after return, depending on your bank. Its terms say “usually within 3 weeks”.
- Debit holds hurt more. On a debit card, the hold reduces money you can actually spend. Enterprise warns that debit renters are responsible for any overdraft fees.
General guidance: if you use debit, keep a buffer in the account above the deposit amount listed in your rental conditions.

How Discover Cars’ filters show deposit and payment terms
Discover Cars is a booking site, not a rental company. Its terms say it doesn’t operate a fleet and arranges rentals with local suppliers, whose rules apply at the counter. Three things help if you don’t have a credit card:
- Debit-card filter: shows offers whose supplier accepts debit.
- No-card filter: Discover Cars’ help centre says you can search for a no-card offer.
- “Deposit-free” label: Discover Cars’ terms (section 10) say some offers are marked deposit-free. With these, you don’t leave a deposit with the rental company at pick-up because Discover Cars guarantees it instead. You still need a card if you buy extras or change or extend the rental at the desk. You also remain fully liable: if Discover Cars pays the rental company, you must repay it, within 10 business days of its invoice.
Compare debit-friendly and deposit-free offers on Discover Cars. Availability varies by location and date, so a filter can show nothing in a small town even when it shows plenty at a big airport.
Renting abroad without a credit card (Portugal, Italy, Greece)
Popular destinations like Portugal, Italy and Greece don’t have one national rule; it comes down to the supplier. We didn’t find an official country-wide rule for any of the three, so don’t rely on blog claims that “debit always works” in a particular country.
What the Discover Cars terms do say applies everywhere:
- Payment at pick-up varies. Suppliers may accept credit cards, debit cards or cash for amounts paid at the desk, and some accept only credit cards.
- Some take a cash deposit. The terms allow for a cash deposit taken by the rental company, where the supplier’s conditions say so.
- Credit checks can happen. The terms say a supplier may run a security or credit-score check at pick-up and refuse the car.
- Documents: you need your licence from your country of residence, and some suppliers also require an International Driving Permit. For the rules, check travel.gc.ca for your destination.
Search rental cars abroad on Discover Cars and filter by payment type before you compare prices.
What if I don’t have a credit card to rent a car?
Discover Cars’ help centre suggests these options if the main driver doesn’t have an accepted card:
- Change the main driver to someone travelling with you who has an accepted credit card.
- Choose a different offer: one that accepts debit, or a no-card or deposit-free offer.
- Ask the supplier whether buying its extra insurance lets you collect the car without a credit card.
Other options (general guidance): get a low-limit credit card in your own name well before the trip, or skip the rental. For Halifax, our Halifax airport to downtown guide covers the bus, taxis and transfers.
Tips: prepaying and full coverage
- Prepaying doesn’t remove the deposit. Discover Cars says you can pay online with debit, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay, but those methods may not work at the desk. The online payment and the deposit are separate.
- Discover Cars’ Full Coverage doesn’t remove the deposit either. It says Full Coverage is reimbursement protection: the supplier still takes its deposit, you pay any damage charge first, then claim it back within 90 days of drop-off. It doesn’t cover third-party liability.
- The supplier’s own zero-excess cover can reduce the deposit, Discover Cars notes, but it’s usually an expensive extra. With a debit card, it may be the condition for renting at all.
- Check your card type. Discover Cars says if you’re not sure whether your card counts as a credit card, ask your bank.

FAQ: renting a car without a credit card
Can you rent a car without a credit card in Canada?
Sometimes. Enterprise Canada accepts major debit cards at many locations, with conditions such as proof of address, and requires a credit card for 4x4s and premium cars. Avis Canada doesn’t accept debit cards as credit identification at pick-up. Check your exact location’s policy.
Which rental car companies don’t require a credit card?
Enterprise accepts debit at many Canadian branches, with conditions that vary by branch. On Discover Cars, use the debit-card filter, the no-card filter or look for offers labelled deposit-free, then read each offer’s rental conditions.
Can I rent a car with a debit card and no deposit?
Possibly, with an offer Discover Cars labels deposit-free. Its terms say you don’t leave a deposit with the rental company at pick-up because Discover Cars guarantees it, but you remain liable and must repay any amount it pays.
What if I don’t have a credit card to rent a car?
Discover Cars suggests changing the main driver to someone with an accepted card, choosing an offer that accepts debit or needs no card, or asking the supplier whether buying its extra insurance lets you rent without one.
Does full coverage remove the security deposit?
No. Discover Cars says its Full Coverage is reimbursement protection, so the supplier still takes its deposit. A supplier’s own zero-excess cover can reduce the deposit, but it’s usually an expensive extra.
