Halifax to Lisbon Flights: WestJet Non-Stop & Entry Rules

Lisbon is one of the newest non-stops from Halifax. WestJet started flying the route in summer 2026, and it’s a daytime flight that lands in the evening. This guide covers just Halifax to Lisbon: when the non-stop runs, what’s known about 2027, how to get there the rest of the year, getting from the airport into the city, and the entry rules for Canadians, including Europe’s new Entry/Exit System. For every European route from Halifax, see our cheap flights from Halifax to Europe guide.

Flight details come from Halifax Stanfield and WestJet, entry rules from travel.gc.ca, and airport transport from Lisbon Airport and the Lisbon Metro, all checked October 21, 2026. We don’t quote fares; they change daily.

Is there a direct flight from Halifax to Lisbon?

Yes, in summer. WestJet is the only airline flying Halifax–Lisbon non-stop. For 2026, Halifax Stanfield’s non-stop list showed:

AirlinePeak frequencyDays2026 season
WestJet5 times a weekMon, Wed, Fri, Sat, SunMay 1 – October 23, 2026

WestJet listed Halifax–Lisbon among its new routes for summer 2026. Unlike most transatlantic flights from Halifax, it’s a daytime flight. Published 2026 schedule data showed late-morning or early-afternoon departures from Halifax, landing in Lisbon the same evening, local time. Check WestJet for exact times. The 2026 season wraps up on October 23, so after that there’s no non-stop until spring.

Search Halifax–Lisbon fares or compare on Aviasales.

General guidance: a daytime eastbound flight means no red-eye. You arrive in the evening, so book your first night’s hotel and plan for a late check-in.

Summer 2027: what we know

  • Not on the list of cuts: when WestJet filed its first summer 2027 changes in September, it removed Halifax–Copenhagen, Halifax–Madrid and Toronto–Glasgow. Lisbon wasn’t on that list (AeroRoutes, reported by PAX News).
  • No 2027 dates yet: as of October 21, 2026, Halifax Stanfield’s list still shows only the 2026 dates, and neither WestJet nor the airport has published 2027 dates. Treat the route as likely but unconfirmed for 2027 until it appears on WestJet’s booking site.
  • The Madrid route is gone, so Lisbon becomes the only non-stop from Halifax to the Iberian Peninsula besides WestJet’s Barcelona service. The airport authority told SaltWire the Barcelona flight continues in 2027, as our Europe guide explains.

General guidance: if you book early for 2027, choose a changeable fare in case the schedule shifts.

Flying to Lisbon outside the summer season

From late October to spring you’ll need a connection. Options from Halifax Stanfield’s list:

  • Through London Heathrow: Air Canada flies Halifax–Heathrow daily, year-round. If you connect there, check the UK’s ETA rules. GOV.UK says Canadians transiting airside (without passing UK border control) don’t currently need an ETA, but you do if you pass through border control.
  • Through Toronto or Montréal: Halifax has year-round non-stops to both. Check which airlines fly onward to Lisbon for your dates.
  • Through the U.S.: Halifax has year-round non-stops to Boston and Newark.
  • Through Frankfurt: Discover Airlines flies Halifax–Frankfurt until November 19, 2026. That connection keeps you inside the Schengen area for the second leg.

General guidance: on a connection, compare the total journey time, not just the fare. On separate tickets, leave plenty of time to collect and re-check bags.

Entry rules for Canadians

Portugal is in the Schengen area. According to travel.gc.ca:

  • Visa: Canadians don’t need a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Those days are cumulative across all Schengen countries, so time in Spain or France counts too.
  • Passport: a regular Canadian passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the date you expect to leave the Schengen area. Your airline may have stricter rules.
  • Other documents: customs officials may ask for a return or onward ticket and proof of funds.
  • Children: travel.gc.ca says minors under 18 travelling alone, or with adults other than their parents or legal guardian, must carry a signed, dated authorization letter with the signature certified by a notary.

Entry/Exit System (EES)

travel.gc.ca says that when you enter the Schengen area, the EU’s Entry/Exit System collects information about your trip, plus your facial image and fingerprints. You don’t need to do anything before you travel. Expect this at the border the first time you arrive.

ETIAS: not yet

travel.gc.ca says Canadians will need to apply online for an ETIAS travel authorization before visiting 30 European countries, including Portugal, but applications aren’t open yet. When it launches, apply only through the official EU website and beware of fraudulent sites.

Travel insurance matters too. travel.gc.ca notes that many private hospitals and clinics in Portugal require advance payment or proof of insurance. Compare travel insurance with VisitorsCoverage.

Lisbon Airport to the city

  • Metro: Lisbon Airport has its own Metro station, and the Aeroporto–Saldanha journey takes about 20 minutes. The Lisbon Metro says the station is in the arrivals area and open from 6:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. It’s on the Red Line, with connections to the rest of the network.
  • Late arrivals: the 2026 WestJet flight landed in the evening, well before the Metro closes. If you’re delayed past 1 a.m., you’ll need a taxi or a pre-booked transfer.
  • Taxis: travel.gc.ca advises using only officially marked taxis and confirming the driver and plate. It notes that baggage and toll charges are sometimes added when starting at the airport.

Safety and practical tips

From travel.gc.ca’s Portugal advice, which rates Portugal “take normal security precautions”:

  • Pickpocketing is common in Lisbon, and travel.gc.ca specifically warns to be extra cautious on trams 15, 25 and 28.
  • Driving: you can drive on a valid Canadian licence for up to 185 days as a non-resident. Most highways have tolls, sometimes payable only electronically. Vehicle break-ins are frequent, so don’t leave anything in the car.
  • Money: Portugal uses the euro.
  • Emergencies: dial 112. The Embassy of Canada is in Lisbon.

Combine with Ireland: WestJet also flies Halifax–Dublin in summer. Fly into one city and home from the other with an open-jaw ticket. See our Halifax to Dublin flights guide.

Before you book: a quick checklist

General guidance, based on the official rules above:

  1. Check your passport date. Count 3 months past the day you’ll leave the Schengen area, not the day you arrive.
  2. Count your Schengen days. If you’re adding Spain, France or another Schengen country, all those days count toward the same 90-in-180 limit.
  3. Confirm the season. Make sure your travel dates fall inside WestJet’s published season before booking hotels.
  4. Plan your arrival. On the evening flight, check that you’ll land before the Metro closes at 1 a.m., or pre-book a transfer.
  5. Sort insurance and data. Buy travel insurance and set up an eSIM before you leave Halifax.
  6. Sort your travel insurance for Europe before you go.
