eSIM for Canada and the USA: Cross-Border Guide (2026)
Heading across the border? This guide is for Canadians travelling to the U.S. (and Americans coming to Canada) who want mobile data without roaming charges. It covers which Airalo eSIM fits a cross-border trip, how setup works and what your phone needs. It’s not a provider comparison; for that, see our Airalo vs Yesim guide.
Everything about Airalo’s plans and setup comes from Airalo’s own store pages, help centre and articles, checked October 20, 2026. We don’t quote prices or data amounts; check the current options in the Airalo app or on its site.

Which eSIM for a Canada–U.S. trip?
Airalo sells three kinds of eSIM: local (one country), regional (several countries) and global. For a cross-border trip, the choice comes down to where you’ll actually use data:
| Your trip | Airalo option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Canadian visiting only the U.S. | United States local eSIM | Covers the one country you need. Your Canadian plan works at home. |
| Canadian visiting the U.S. and Mexico | North America regional eSIM | Airalo says it covers 3 countries: the United States, Canada and Mexico. |
| American visiting only Canada | Canada local eSIM | Covers Canada only. |
| Visitor from overseas touring both Canada and the U.S. | North America regional eSIM | One eSIM across the border, with no switching. |
| Trip that adds Europe or elsewhere | Global eSIM | Airalo’s global eSIMs cover many more countries. |
Airalo’s North America page currently shows unlimited-data packages, and its fixed-data options are listed separately. Airalo lists the North America eSIM (“Americanmex”) as data-only. Its validity period starts when the eSIM connects to a supported network, and top-ups are available.
General guidance: if you live in Canada, your home plan already covers Canada, so a U.S. local eSIM is usually all you need. The regional eSIM makes most sense when Mexico is on the itinerary, or for visitors from outside North America.

Does the eSIM include a phone number?
It depends on the plan, according to Airalo’s help centre:
- “Data Only” plans don’t include calls or texts. You can still use internet calling and messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal.
- “Data, Voice & Text” plans include calls and texts. Airalo says the US eSIM and Canada eSIM are among those available with a phone number. Look for the Data/Calls/Texts toggle at the top of the eSIM’s page.
- Airalo says local packages with calls and texts are for local communication within the country of coverage.
Check the Plan Type in the eSIM’s additional information before you buy.

Is your phone ready?
Airalo says that to use one of its eSIMs, your device must (How Airalo works):
- support eSIM. Some regional models of the same phone don’t.
- be carrier- or network-unlocked. You can’t install an eSIM on a locked phone, so ask your carrier to unlock it first.
- not be jailbroken (iOS) or rooted (Android).
To check an Android phone, Airalo suggests looking for Add eSIM (Samsung: Settings › Connections › SIM Manager) or Download a SIM instead? (Pixel: Settings › Network & internet › SIMs). On other phones, dial \*#06# and look for an EID number. Airalo also keeps a list of compatible devices, but says it isn’t exhaustive. If yours isn’t listed, check with the manufacturer.
When to install and how to turn it on
- Install before you leave. Airalo says you can install your eSIM whenever you like, as long as you have a stable internet connection. You can install it before you reach the coverage area, so it’s ready when you arrive.
- Check the activation policy first. Airalo explains that some eSIMs start their validity when they connect to a network at your destination, and others start as soon as they’re installed. If yours starts immediately, install it right before you travel. The policy is in the eSIM’s “Additional Information”.
- Turn it on when you arrive. Airalo’s steps for iPhone: Settings › Cellular › your eSIM line › Turn On This Line, turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM, then pick a supported network if needed. Android is similar: Settings › Network & Internet › Mobile Network, then turn on the eSIM, mobile data and data roaming.
- Running low? Many Airalo eSIMs can be topped up instead of replaced, and Airalo offers auto-renewal when 10% of your data is left.
Keep your Canadian number without roaming charges
Installing an eSIM doesn’t remove your existing number, according to Airalo. Your phone just gets a second line. With a data-only eSIM you can keep your Canadian line on for calls and texts (handy for bank and two-factor codes) and use the eSIM for data.
Airalo warns that if your main line stays on abroad, your carrier may still charge roaming. To avoid that, turn off Data Roaming on your Canadian line, or switch that line off, and check with your carrier about calls and texts in the U.S.

FAQ: eSIM for Canada and the USA
Is there one eSIM for both Canada and the USA?
Yes. Airalo’s North America regional eSIM covers three countries: the United States, Canada and Mexico. Airalo also sells separate United States and Canada eSIMs.
Which eSIM should a Canadian buy for a U.S. trip?
Usually a United States eSIM, since your Canadian plan already covers you at home. The North America eSIM makes more sense if Mexico is also on your trip.
Do Airalo eSIMs come with a U.S. phone number?
Some do. Airalo says its US eSIM and Canada eSIM are available as Data/Calls/Texts plans with a phone number. Data-only plans don’t include calls or texts, but apps like WhatsApp still work.
Will I keep my Canadian number with an eSIM?
Yes. Airalo says installing an eSIM adds a second line and doesn’t remove your number. Turn off data roaming on your Canadian line to avoid carrier charges.
Does my phone work with an eSIM?
Airalo says it must support eSIM, be carrier-unlocked, and not be jailbroken or rooted. Check Airalo’s compatible-devices list or your manufacturer.
