Airalo Review for Canadians: Is It Worth It?

Last checked Oct 29, 2026. Prices checked Oct 29, 2026 on airalo.com, saily.com and holafly.com, shown in US dollars as listed. Prices change often and your card may add a currency conversion fee, so confirm the price at checkout. We didn’t run our own speed tests, so we don’t quote speeds we haven’t measured.

Roaming on a Canadian plan can get expensive fast, so many travellers now buy a travel eSIM instead. Airalo is one of the best-known names. This Airalo review for Canadians looks at what it costs for the US, Europe and the Caribbean, how setup works, what “data-only” really means, and how it stacks up against Saily and Holafly. If you just want to see the plans, browse Airalo eSIMs here.

Quick verdict

  • Good for: short trips where you want mobile data the moment you land, without paying your carrier’s daily roaming fee.
  • Prices: on Oct 29, 2026, an unlimited 7-day US plan was listed at US$25.00, and the 7-day Europe plan at US$27.00.
  • Watch out for: most plans are data-only, with no phone number, and “unlimited” means 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
  • Our take: worth it for most Canadians on a 3 to 15 day trip who use WhatsApp, FaceTime or similar apps for calls. If you need your Canadian number to take regular calls, compare your carrier’s roaming add-on too.

What Airalo is (and is it legit?)

Airalo is an online eSIM store. You buy a data package for a country, a region or the whole world, install it as a digital SIM on your phone, and it connects to local partner networks when you arrive. On its US page, Airalo says over 30 million people have chosen it, with coverage in 200+ locations and an app in 53 languages.

Is Airalo legit? Yes. Its fair use policy names AirGSM Pte Ltd, a company registered in Singapore, as the business behind it. So, is Airalo Canadian? No, but Canadians can buy and use it like anyone else. Is Airalo safe? It installs a standard eSIM profile alongside your home SIM, which stays on your phone, and you pay through Airalo’s site or the app stores. As with any app, use a strong password and a card with fraud protection.

Airalo prices for popular trips

Here are Airalo’s unlimited packages as listed on its United States, Europe and Caribbean Islands pages on Oct 29, 2026. Airalo shows prices in US dollars by default and also supports other currencies in its app, but we didn’t confirm a Canadian dollar price, so we’ve left these in USD.

Airalo also sells fixed-data packages, such as 1 GB, 3 GB, 5 GB or 10 GB, which can cost less if you mostly use Wi-Fi. The US page also lists a North America regional eSIM “from” US$5.50 and a Global eSIM from US$8.50. Check today’s Airalo prices for your destination.

Setting up Airalo on iPhone and Android

First, check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Most recent iPhones and many Android phones from Samsung, Google and others do, but some carrier-locked phones won’t accept another provider’s eSIM. Airalo links a compatible devices list from each package page.

On iPhone

  • Buy the package in the Airalo app or on airalo.com while you’re on stable Wi-Fi, ideally at home before you leave.
  • Follow the app’s install prompt (or scan the QR code) and add the eSIM under Settings, then Cellular (or Mobile Data).
  • Label it something like “Travel”, and keep your Canadian line for calls and texts if you want.
  • When you land, set the travel eSIM as your Cellular Data line and turn on Data Roaming for that line only.

On Android

  • Buy and install over Wi-Fi from the app, or scan the QR code under Settings, then Connections or Network, then SIM manager.
  • Turn on the eSIM and choose it for mobile data when you arrive.
  • Turn on roaming for the eSIM. Turn off roaming on your Canadian SIM if you want to avoid roaming charges.

Timing matters. Airalo’s help centre says most packages start their validity when the eSIM connects to a supported network in its coverage area, though some start when you install. The package details tell you which. Get the Airalo app and eSIM a day or two before you fly.

Data-only: calls, texts and hotspot

Let’s be clear: most Airalo packages are data-only. They don’t come with a phone number, so you can’t make normal calls or send normal texts on them. Instead you use apps that run over data, such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal or Google Meet. Your Canadian SIM can stay switched on for texts, such as bank codes, but watch your carrier’s roaming charges for calls and texts on that line.

One update: on Oct 29, 2026, Airalo’s US and Europe pages also offered a “Data / Calls / Texts” filter, with packages that include a set number of minutes and SMS, such as 3 GB with 30 minutes and 30 SMS. If you need a local number, check those package details carefully. Otherwise, assume the plan is data-only.

Hotspot: Airalo’s fair use policy says you can use your phone as a hotspot on unlimited packages, with no limit on devices. Hotspot data counts toward the same daily allowance: once you use more than 3 GB in a day, speed drops to 1 Mbps until it resets 24 hours after activation. For fixed-data plans, hotspot use simply uses up your data.

Coverage and speed

Airalo doesn’t run its own towers. It uses local partner networks; on Oct 29, 2026, the US page listed T-Mobile as the primary network plus one other. Each package page shows the networks used, so check it for the places you’re going, especially rural areas or national parks.

Speed depends on the local network, your location and how busy it is. Airalo’s policy says networks may manage traffic at busy times and that it makes no warranty on speed. We haven’t tested speeds ourselves, so we won’t quote numbers. The one firm figure is the unlimited plan’s 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day, which is enough for maps and messaging but slow for video.

Problems and fixes

Searching “airalo esim canada not working”? These fixes solve most problems:

  • No signal on arrival: check that the eSIM line is turned on and set for mobile data, and that data roaming is on for that line.
  • Still nothing: toggle airplane mode on and off, or restart your phone so it searches for networks again.
  • Connected but no internet: compare the APN in your phone settings with the one shown in the Airalo app.
  • “SIM not supported”: your phone may be carrier-locked. Ask your Canadian carrier to unlock it before you travel.
  • Ran out of data: buy a top-up in the app. Airalo says many eSIMs can be topped up, so you don’t need a new one.
  • Still stuck: Airalo lists 24/7 support in multiple languages, including on WhatsApp.

Tip: don’t delete the eSIM from your phone while troubleshooting, since you may not be able to reinstall it.

Airalo vs Saily vs Holafly

Here’s how the three compare on the facts each company published on Oct 29, 2026, looking at a US trip.

For Europe, Holafly listed 7 days at US$27.50 and 15 days at US$51.50 on its Europe page, close to Airalo’s US$27.00 and US$49.00. The big differences are the fine print. Airalo has the widest choice of fixed and unlimited plans. Saily offers a phone number add-on and bigger daily full-speed data on unlimited US plans. Holafly is simple but limits hotspot sharing. Compare Airalo plans for your trip.

Another option is Yesim, run by Genesis Group AG in Switzerland. Its site offers country and regional plans plus a pay-as-you-go “Pay & Fly” option that lets you keep unused balance for another trip. Yesim says its prepaid plans are data-only with no phone number. See Yesim plans.

Who should and shouldn’t use it

Airalo is a good fit if you

  • take short or medium trips to the US, Europe or the Caribbean and want data as soon as you land;
  • are happy calling and texting through apps;
  • want to choose between small fixed-data plans and unlimited ones;
  • travel a few times a year and like topping up one eSIM in an app.

Skip it (or look elsewhere) if you

  • need to take lots of calls on your Canadian number while away;
  • plan to stream video or hotspot heavily every day, since unlimited slows after 3 GB a day;
  • have a carrier-locked phone or one without eSIM support;
  • are going for months, where a local SIM or your carrier’s long-term plan may make more sense.

FAQ

Is Airalo legit and safe?

Yes. Airalo is run by AirGSM Pte Ltd, a company registered in Singapore, and it sells eSIMs through its own website and the App Store and Google Play apps. You pay Airalo directly and install a standard eSIM profile, so your home SIM and number stay on your phone.

Is Airalo a Canadian company?

No. Airalo's fair use policy names AirGSM Pte Ltd, registered in Singapore, as the company behind the service. Canadians can still buy and use it, and Airalo also sells eSIMs for Canada for visitors.

Is Airalo data-only?

Most Airalo packages are data-only, with no phone number, so you call and text through apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime. On Oct 29, 2026, Airalo also listed some Data / Calls / Texts packages for the US and Europe with a set number of minutes and SMS. Check the package details before you buy.

Does Airalo work in Canada and the USA on one eSIM?

Airalo sells a North America regional eSIM as well as single-country eSIMs. Check the coverage list on the package page to confirm the countries you need before you buy.

Why is my Airalo eSIM not working?

The usual fixes are to make sure the eSIM line is turned on and selected for mobile data, turn on data roaming for that line, toggle airplane mode or restart the phone, and check the APN settings shown in the Airalo app. If it still fails, Airalo offers 24/7 support, including on WhatsApp.

Can I use a hotspot with Airalo?

Yes on unlimited packages: Airalo's fair use policy allows tethering with no limit on devices, but hotspot use counts toward the daily 3 GB high-speed allowance, after which speed drops to 1 Mbps until it resets.

Are there Airalo discount codes for Canadians?

We didn't find a promotion we could confirm, so we don't list any codes. Check Airalo's site or app for current offers at checkout.
